Guanabana, Graviola or SourSop is the fruit of Annona muricata.

Guanabana, graviola or soursop is the fruit of Annona muricata and the exact origin is unknown. This is a large, heart-shaped fruit with small nibs. The skin is dark green and turns slightly yellowish green when ripe.

Areas of high humidity and relatively warm winters are perfect for SourSop – Guanabana Fruit. Temperatures below 5 °C (41 °F) will cause damage to leaves and small branches. Temperatures below 3 °C (37 °F) can be fatal, as a result the fruit becomes dry and is no longer good for consume.

When ready to eat SourSop – Guanabana Fruit is very soft to the touch and begins to break down quickly. Flavor of the fruit has been described as a combination of lettuce and tomatoes. With sour citrus flavor notes contrasting and creamy texture like coconut or banana is most typically used to make a sweet beverage and it’s ideal for processing and preservation.

The juice can be used to make ice creams, sorbets, mousse, or custards. Frozen pulp can be eaten or used to create jellies, syrups or nectar. Shelf-life of this fruit is only a few days at room temperature.

SourSop – Guanabana Fruit has a spiny skin that’s not edible and is dark green until mature when it becomes yellowish green in color. It has a similar scent and flavor to the pineapple but a bit musky in flavor as well. The flesh is an off-white color, granular, fibrous and juicy. It grows in segments where there is an oval, smooth, hard, black seed, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch long containing anywhere from a few dozen to 200 or more seeds.

Tea made from the leaves of the Guanabana tree is used as a sleep aid. Before ingesting the pulp or before juicing, remove the seeds because they are toxic.
